Eine Bibliothek ist sowohl eine Gemeinschaft von Büchern als auch der Ort der sie beherbergt. Im Gegensatz zur abgeschlossenen Form der einzelnen Bücher treten auf den Regalen die Nachbarschaften, Beziehungen und Querverweise in den Vordergrund. Welche Diskurse und Netzwerke werden hier an einem Ort versammelt?
Im Zentrum der Ausstellung Library Ideal Ideal Library steht ein identisches Duplikat der Bibliothek des Kunstraums Lakeside in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee – eine unsystematische Ansammlung von Künstler*innen- und Theoriebüchern, die seit der Gründung analog zum Programm gewachsen ist. Im vergangen Jahr ist Robin Waart für seine Ausstellung in Klagenfurt mit in der Bibliothek vertretenen Autor*innen, Verlagen und Institutionen in Kontakt getreten, um eine Kopie der Bibliothek zusammenzutragen.
Diese verdoppelte Bibliothek wird ab März als Gast in die Infrastruktur des IDEAL eingeschrieben, um im neuen Kontext, mit gewechseltem Publikum und anderen Öffnungszeiten, ein zweites paralleles Fortleben zu entwickeln.
Bücher existieren nie allein, jede Bibliothek ist auch eine unter vielen. Während der Ausstellung wird Robin Waart mit der Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaftlerin Regine Ehleiter und zwei anderen künstlerischen Bibliotheksprojekten von Samuel Bich und Claudia de la Torre ins Gespräch kommen, um die unterschiedlichen paratextuellen Strukturen und Strategien zu diskutieren, die die Künstler*innen verwenden.
Die Bibliothek wird durch neue Einträge der beteiligten Künstler*innen erweitert und das Projekt wird von einer kollaborativen Publikation begleitet, das die Ausstellungen im IDEAL und Lakeside verbindet, sowie einer Fahne im Lakeside Science Park. Während der Ausstellung zeigt das IDEAL DIALOG Billboard die Projekte Waart’s, Bich’s and de la Torre’s im öffentlichen Raum Leipzigs.

Die Kunsthistorikerin Regine Ehleiter stellt im Gespräch mit Robin Waart die Lakeside Library im Kontext anderer künstlerischer Bibliotheksprojekte vor, die sich mit Themen der Vervielfältigung, Zirkulation, Teilhabe, des (Nicht-)Lesens, Ausleihens von Büchern und Fragen ihrer Präsentation und der Architektur einer Bibliothek beschäftigen. Diskutiert werden kanonische, historische Projekte von Martha Rosler, Günther Förg, Clegg & Guttmann, neuere Arbeiten von Kajsa Dahlberg, Heman Chong, Meriç Algün, Elmgreen & Dragset sowie die Projekte von Claudia de la Torre und Samuel Bich und die dazugehörigen Billboards, die Teil der Ausstellung im IDEAL sind.
Claudia de la Torre x Robin Waart / The Questions Library: 14. April, 16:00 Uhr
Claudia de la Torre startete 2013 das installative Projekt The Questions Library mit dem Ziel, Bücher zu sammeln, zu klassifizieren und zu zeigen, deren Titel als Frage formuliert sind. Für jede Version des Projekts werden die Besucher*innen eingeladen, ein Buch zu spenden, das im Titel eine Frage enthält, und sich so mit ihrem Beitrag an der Erweiterung des Bibliotheksbestands zu beteiligen, der derzeit etwa 550 Titel umfasst. Auf jede Frage folgt eine weitere Frage und über ordnende Kategorien, Regale, Abteilungen wächst die Sammlung über das Quijotistische und Selbstreferentielle hinaus. Die Buchrücken treten miteinander ins Gespräch. The Questions Library wird zu einem Ort, der die Frage stellt, warum wir überhaupt Bücher lesen und machen.
Samuel Bich x Robin Waart / Bibliothek Cathrin Pichler: 05. Mai, 18:00 Uhr
Die Cathrin Pichler Bibliothek enthält alle Ausstellungskataloge und Publikationen, bei denen die Kuratorin und Forscherin Cathrin Pichler (1946 - 2012) involviert war. Die Bibliothek versammelt so ein komplettes Set der Bücher, bei denen sie Herausgeberin oder Autorin war oder zu denen sie für Beiträge und Kommentare eingeladen wurde. Bichs Cathrin Pichler Bibliothek ist die Synopsis eines Lebens, das sie mit Schreiben und Kuratieren verbracht hat, und verhandelt Kategorien zwischen dem, was persönlich, was Arbeit und dem, was beides ist. Die Bibliothek ist der Ausgangspunkt für eine weiterführende Beschäftigung mit dem Cathrin Pichler Archiv in seiner aktuellen Ausstellung bei Scriptings, Berlin, die vom 23. März bis Juni 2024 zu sehen ist.

A library is both a collection of books as well as the place that contains them. Unlike the self-contained format of the individual book, when books find themselves together in a library, it is the relationships between them that start to matter more: as stories and networks gathered together on a set of shelves.
The library at the heart of Library Ideal Ideal Library is a copy of the library of Kunstraum Lakeside in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, an unsystematic collection of artist’s and theory publications accumulated since the founding of the space in 2005, mirroring its program. As part of his exhibition in Klagenfurt, Robin Waart spent the past year reaching out to authors, publishers and institutions represented in the library to make a duplicate.
From March on, this doubled library will be a guest of IDEAL Art Space. In two distinct spaces at the same time, the first at home in Kunstraum Lakeside, the second visiting Leipzig, the libraries develop a parallel existence while communicating from afar: in different contexts, with a change of audience and different opening hours.
But books never come alone, and every library is one among many. In the course of the exhibition, Robin Waart will enter into conversation with art historian Regine Ehleiter and two other artistic library projects by Samuel Bich and Claudia de la Torre to discuss the paratextual structures and strategies they use.
The libraries will be expanded with new entries by the participating artists and the project will be accompanied by a collaborative publication connecting the shows at IDEAL and Lakeside, marked by a flag in the Lakeside Science Park. In March, April and May respectively, the IDEAL DIALOG billboard will feature Waart’s, Bich’s and de la Torre’s projects.

Art-historian Regine Ehleiter will be talking with Robin Waart, introducing his Lakeside Library in the context of other artistic library projects that involve themes of multiplication, traveling, participation, (not) reading, borrowing, and questions relating to architecture and display. They will discuss canonical, historical projects by Martha Rosler, Günther Förg, Clegg & Guttmann, more recent works by Kajsa Dahlberg, Heman Chong, Meriç Algün, Elmgreen & Dragset, as well as the projects by Claudia de la Torre and Samuel Bich, and their accompanying billboards that are part of the exhibition at IDEAL.
Claudia de la Torre x Robin Waart / The Questions Library: 14 April, 4pm
Claudia de la Torre started The Questions Library in 2013 as an installation project with the aim of gathering, classifying, and showing books whose titles are phrased as questions. For each version of the project, visitors are invited to donate a book containing a question in the title and to participate in enlarging the library’s stock – now about 550 titles – with their contribution. Growing, one type of question, one shelf (or department) of questions at a time, the questions de la Torre’s The Questions Library itself raises extend beyond the quixotic and self-referential. It becomes a place to question why we read and make books.
Samuel Bich x Robin Waart / Bibliothek Cathrin Pichler: 05 May, 6pm
The Cathrin Pichler Library contains all the exhibition catalogues and publications the curator and researcher Cathrin Pichler (1946 – 2012) was responsible for. Its aim is to compile a complete set of the books Pichler was involved in, either as their editor or author but also when she was invited for a commentary or contribution. A synopsis of a lifetime spent writing and curating, Bich’s Cathrin Pichler Bibliothek negotiates categories, between what is personal, work, and both. Extending his work on the Cathrin Pichler Archive, the library is the starting point of Bich’s concurrent exhibition at Scriptings, Berlin, running from 23 March to June 2024.
