/// "[...] He, Putin, expressly approved of any preparations by Yeltsin and the military to bring about a Pinochet-style dictatorship in view of the difficult path of the private sector. Putin's remarks were received with friendly applause by both the German company representatives and the deputy German consul general who was present."
Neues Deutschland, December 31, 1993
/// The mirror stereoscope is an optical instrument for the three-dimensional evaluation of aerial photographs and the mapping of terrain, for example for strategic military purposes. By superimposing two images, stereoscopy enables the reproduction of a spatial impression, whereby the depth of the surface remains an illusion.
The starting point of the exhibition "with friendly applause" is the continuity of Russia's propagandistic staging before and after the invasion of Ukraine. The narratives characterized by militarism and nationalism - masked as harmless stage sets of a grotesque re-enactment of historical (pre)images - are confronted with the reality of war today. In the exhibition, Juliane Jaschnow shifts the perspective to individual fragments of Russia's media productions and examines the mechanisms of disinformation and deception. "with friendly applause" follows on from the exhibition "REKAPITULIEREN", which was shown in the same rooms in 2020/21.
